CSIRAC was Australia’s first and the world’s fourth electronic computer and the only one to have survived intact. It was built by my employer, the CSIRO a few years after the end of World War II. You can read more about CSIRAC’s history here.
CSIRAC was rebuilt for static display at the Melbourne Museum. I took some photos of the display during a recent visit to Melbourne. It’s interesting to note that some adjacent text places some of the blame for a lack of Australian computing development on the work that my division of the CSIRO does – astronomy!
